        Thank you

        (kicks self)

        Bridge player, I had got that — N E W or S. yep

And plane was a horizontal surface or an aircraft . . . I got that far
But the tool to plane wood was right out of sight . . .

So was the bridge player sitting on a wing, or flat out crossing the surface?
        Nope.

You see my handicap — not quite enough laterality in the thinking.

In puzzle number 1097, 8 across, the answer is abundant. The explanation is aunt + b for bishop + ant for worker. Where does the ‘d’ come from? Is it anything to do with Desperate Dan, who might have been a worker?!

Ye, ‘worker’ does suggest ANT but I think in this case AUNT entertains B plus an anagram of AND. ‘Worker’ here signifies the anagram. A rather misleading clue I thought!
