The clue is ‘Note tin has turned up with tortilla chips’. ‘Note’ is SOH (in the Sol-Fa scale, also spelled SO or SOL) . ‘Tin’ is CAN. ‘Turn them up’ means to write the letter upside down, ie starting from the bottom of the grid. So we have SOHCAN reversed which is NACHOS. Tricky!

Hi Colin… this is an old crossword now and I no longer have the original clues! Can you please reply with the clue and I’ll provide an explanation?

      Thanks…

Colin, I have found the original clue from some months ago: Made a loud racket (7)

Yes, ‘made’ is the definition as you point out. ‘A loud racket’ is a play on words: ‘a loud’ can be seen as ‘aloud’. In other words the answer sounds like RORT, a synonym for a racket in the sense of a scam.

      I hope this helps!

Thank you for helping me make sense of that wrought-rort. I missed the “sounds like” hint completely.
