Tossman 1003. Could you please explain the answer to 25 across. What has happened to the section where one could find such explanations ?
Hi Janet – thanks for your comment!
25 Across: Palmerston North is ‘PN’, working is ‘ON’ (as in an electrical device, say) and excessively is ‘TOO’. Put ON+TOO in PN and you get PONTOON, which is another name for the card game ‘Twenty-one’.
Actually, we’ve always relied on these comment sections for explanations of answers. This allows us to publish the answers very quickly after the puzzles are published, and allows for more detailed explanations if necessary. So thank you, you’ve done exactly the right thing in asking the question!
I cannot comprehend 21 down. Can you elucidate please?
Hi Colin. Tossman 1003 was published over a year ago so I no longer have the original clues. If you post the clue here, I will reply with an explanation!
I am working my way through the puzzles in a stack of old Listeners I have been given and have met several challenging clues but this one I could not fathom.
Crossword 1003
21 Down
Clue: Blue sort of clue.
Answer: DOWN.
And of course, now that the groundwater of inspiration has seeped slowly through the filtering gravels of the little grey cells and reached the bedrock of understanding all has suddenly become clear.
Blue, unhappy, hence feeling down.
And across and down are clues.
Simple when you know. Or it would have been, had not the grimy window of misdirected inquiry obscured my view of the obvious.
I have been wracking what little brain exists searching for a colour reference in the word, not a mood.
Haha – love the images of the ‘groundwater of inspiration’ and the ‘grimy window of misdirected inquiry’ 🙂
Glad you’ve sorted out the answer! Now that you’ve posted the clue I do remember it – quite elegant really.
Thanks again for your comments, Colin…
