      Sorry, Lesley – I usually try to reply to comments and questions straight away but someone borrowed my Listener and I didn’t have the original clue to refer to!

      27 Across is an anagram of ‘HECKLE A’ plus O, and ‘gob’ is the synonym – both are old colloquial words for ‘mouth’.

        Duh! thanks for putting me out of my misery. Sometimes I am blind to anagrams and this was one of those times, focusing on finding a synonym for crook – even after I worked out the answer (by connection to gob) I didn’t see it. Oh dear. But Tx.

          No problem Lesley. It’s odd how sometimes we really have to scratch our heads over a puzzle, then when we do get the answer it seems to have been staring us in the face all the time!
