Flash fiction challenge:
Bullets ricocheted off the ancient stonework as me and the pontiff ran round the back of the museum desperately looking for a place to hide. Luckily, there was a dumpster up against the fence – we heaved up the lid and climbed in. We were pretty sure that the guards chasing us would be much too fastidious to look in there – the smell was horrendous as we burrowed down into the cardboard and food scraps. We stayed there for hours, not daring to speak. We heard the guards wandering round the carpark for a bit, then all fell silent. Hours later, as it began to get dark, we decided it was time to get out of there. In the dumpster was a pile of Victorian ladieswear, obviously chucked out by the museum. We put the long dresses on over our priestly garments, climbed out of the dumpster and patted our pockets to make sure the Vatican jewels were still safe. I smiled to myself as we headed off onto the night.
