Hi! I was wondering if you could shed some light on how you got “Meat Pie” for the answer to 6 down please? “Suitable letter from Athens, when read out, describes food (4,3)”

I can see pi and pie but where does the meat come from?

It’s a tricky clue, Rick! ‘When read out’ suggests that at least part of the answer is a homophone, ie sounds like another word. ‘Suitable’ is ‘meet’ which sounds like MEAT. ‘Pi’ is a Greek letter which sounds like PIE.

      I hope this is helpful…

Thanks for your quick reply, it’s appreciated.

I never considered “suitable” to be analogous to “meet”, but then I look it up and find that “meet” is indeed an adjective meaning “suitable” in old English. Crosswords really are an education.
